Red Harvest: A Graphic Novel of the Terror Famine in Soviet Ukraine x Michael Cherkas (DRC)

144 pages.

Expected publication date: Nov. 14, 2023 (NBM Publishing)

Graphic novel.

It’s impossible to say you enjoyed a book like this—about a horrific event in human history—but the graphic style is brilliant, and beautiful, and I enjoyed that. The content, about the Holodomor, makes for extremely difficult reading.

This was my introduction to the subject, and Cherkas has done a marvelous job in making it so real and accessible to readers. I can’t begin to imagine what it would take to bring those memories to the page—questioning elders, causing them to relive it—but it is work worth doing, and “Red Harvest” is an important memorial.

A sombre and moving read. Thank you to NBM Publishing for access.
