Harare Review of Books

Have you read The Old Drift, by Namwali Serpell? There’s a character in the book called Matha Mwamba, who (mild spoiler) is an Afronaut. That’s based on the real Matha Mwamba, who was part of a real space programme in Zambia in the 1960s, the brainchild of Edward Makuka Nkoloso, founder of the Zambia National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy.

All of that has led to the reimagining of the concept of Afronauts as part of Afrofuturism (or, perhaps, more properly, Africanfuturism); which leads to all sorts of rabbit trails 🤩
